The latest entry in the long-running Total War series was officially unveiled. The latest entry in the Total War series will be taking things to a very grimdark place. Total War: Warhammer 40,000 was officially announced as part of The Game Awards on December 11. Actor and Warhammer 40K fan David Harbour announced the new strategy game from developer Creative Assembly on stage at the show, where he outlined his 40K nerd credentials and also broke the news he will be featured in the game. Want us to remember this setting for all your devices? Now Playing: Total War WARHAMMER 40,000 - Announce Trailer Total War: Warhammer 40K's debut trailer showed Ultramarines battling against Orkish hordes, as a voiceover outlined the stakes of a universe at war where countless battles are always raging and humanity stands on the brink of destruction. While the trailer was mostly cinematic in nature, the tail end did show some early gameplay, showing how the Total War franchise will handle battles between its sci-fi armies and interplanetary strategy. In a move rare for complex strategy games, Total War: Warhammer 40K will be coming to consoles as well as PC. According to the game's Steam page, there will be four playable factions: Space Marines, Orks, Aeldari, and the Astra Militarum. Players will be able to forge their own custom armies, choose its colors, and outfit warriors with tactical abilities, traits, and wargear. The game's galactic scale seems to be front and center, as Creative Assembly states players will be able to bombard planets from orbit, or if they become too big of an issue, erase planets entirely with apocalyptic world-destroying weaponry. The Warhammer 40,000 series has been on quite the roll lately, with the excellent Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 releasing back in 2024 to both critical and commercial acclaim. A follow-up to the RPG Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader called Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy is also currently in development, set to release across PC and consoles. A retro shooter set in the 40K universe, Boltgun, is set to receive a sequel next year as well.
