The spirit of Garry's Mod continues to live on – and not just from, y'know, all the people still playing Garry's Mod in 2026. The Prop Hunt mode that the legendary sandbox helped popularize is now a part of everything from Fortnite to Genshin Impact, and we'll soon be able to add World of Warcraft to that list. Yes, Blizzard's MMO is getting its own take on Prop Hunt this year.
In WoW, the mode will be called Decor Duel, and in today's State of Azeroth broadcast, director Ion Hazzikostas was not shy about calling it a "Prop Hunt-inspired event." It'll land as part of patch 12.0.5, which will hit the PTR "shortly after Midnight's launch."
Described as "a small diversion," Decor Duel will have you "queue up and find yourself on a team facing off against another small team of five in a location like Silvermoon City, or the Alliance and Horde neighborhoods, where one team uses enchantment and illusion to disguise themselves cleverly as innocuous props and try to hide in the environment, while the other team tries to seek them out."
World of Warcraft devs were going to fix the MMO's floating houses, but "immediately agreed this was way too cool"
Garry's Mod is, unbelievably, still kicking and just got a new update, improving some of the popular Half-Life mod's visuals, NPC behavior, and even bringing over some new weapons
World of Warcraft lead thinks the MMO will still be "kicking" in 10 years, but despite having ideas for "the very long run," Blizzard is currently focusing "on the next 5 years"
Yep, that sure does sound like Prop Hunt. The game mode's origins reach back into the shadowy pre-history of online gaming mods, but the take made for Garry's Mod is the one that stuck. Play hide-and-seek as a piece of movable furniture and wait for chaos to ensue. The appeal is pretty self-explanatory, and it's little wonder it remains so popular that the biggest games in the world are now regularly swiping from it.
But World of Warcraft in particular hasn't been afraid of getting zanier with its diversionary side activities. Just look at that 60-player pirate battle royale mode. The only real question is what's next. A take on social deduction ala Among Us? An extraction mode? Anything would be a nice respite from all the death WoW players are apparently in for.
Here are the best MMOs you can play today.
