Team Asano, the Square Enix subdivision responsible for beloved JRPG gems like Bravely Default, Dragon Quest, and Octopath Traveler, is asking fans what remake they'd like to see in the future – and, of course, the obvious answer is Chrono Trigger.
At least it is for me – a solid 31 years have passed since the 1995 game first launched – and no, the higher-resolution version released for PC in 2018 does not count as a remake. I'm not alone in wanting a revamped Chrono Trigger either, with countless threads online begging Square Enix for one… but it feels closer to becoming reality now than ever. Team Asano, who most recently headed the first three Dragon Quest games' HD remakes, could do it.
The Square Enix team, led by talented developer Tomoya Asano, has launched a poll aimed at longtime fans, and the questions have me on some serious hopium. As flagged by forum users on ResetEra, one of them reads, "Is there a Square Enix title you would like to see remade in the future?" The devs clarify that folks should only request one title (reasonable, seeing as there are a good few very valid answers one could input).
Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii isn't saying there's a Chrono Trigger remake, but he's not saying there isn't one: "I can't say ... I'll get told off!"
"I really love the Persona series – especially Persona 3," says Dragon Quest 7 remake dev, director names Final Fantasy
The Outer Worlds 2 director bravely says Chrono Trigger is "the best JRPG ever and it's not even close" - and that it doesn't get enough credit for being one of the only ones where "you don't actually have to grind"
Team Asano then queries, "In what format would you like it remade?" Another HD-2D, "doll look" (think Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined), pixel remaster, or full remaster – it's up to fans. The devs also ask for clarification on another point, considering the potential remake: "What additional elements would make you more likely to purchase a remake/remaster?" You know, more main story content, endgame progression, etc.
It's an exciting questionnaire to be sure, especially coming two months after the Famitsu interview in which Team Asano teased another possible new 2026 game. Obviously, it's unlikely – if they even are seriously considering undertaking one – that a remake would come this year, but it's fun to speculate. Commenters on ResetEra throw out some other suggestions, too, like Bahamut Lagoon and various Final Fantasy entries.
