Hell, it's about time.
StarCraft may be set for a comeback, with a new report indicating a third-person shooter set in Blizzard's sci-fi franchise will be revealed at this year's BlizzCon.
According to a report from Windows Central's Jez Corden on what to expect from Xbox this year, a StarCraft shooter could headline Blizzard's fan convention in September.
Details about the game, including whether or not it will be a multiplayer title, are light, but it was first reported to exist in 2024 by Bloomberg reporter Jason Schrierer in his book Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment. Former Far Cry lead Dan Hay is said to be leading the project. Corden said he's confirmed the game's existence with his own sources, but did not share any additional information on what the game will look like.
It wouldn't be the first time Blizzard has tried to get a StarCraft shooter off the ground. Blizzard somewhat infamously axed a third-person shooter spin-off titled StarCraft: Ghost in the mid-2000s: one that would have seen players in the boots of a "Ghost" and set after the events of StarCraft's Brood War expansion. While the game was missing in action for years, it took until 2014 for then Blizzard president Mike Morhaime to officially confirm the game had been canceled.
Though StarCraft has been mostly dormant at Blizzard for the last decade (the last campaign pack for the game released in 2016) it has popped up in other Blizzard games in the forms of various crossovers. Blizzard recently offered StarCraft-themed skins in Diablo 4 and Hearthstone received an entire StarCraft-themed card set at the beginning of last year.
As for what other announcements fans can expect at BlizzCon 2026, Corden reports it's likely another Diablo 4 expansion will be announced just six months after the launch of Lord of Hatred, as well as new details on World of Warcraft's The Last Titan expansion and what's next for Overwatch.
