PS6 could reportedly be delayed while Switch 2 might get even more expensive as Sony and Nintendo reckon with brutal AI-led memory chip shortage

The PS6 might be coming much later than expected while the Switch 2 could get even more expensive than it is now, according to a new report. If you've been wondering why RAM prices have surged so much over the last few months, there's a very good chance that the generative AI boom has something to do with it. AI data centers have been swooping up a huge share of memory chip production, leaving other tech companies and consumers in a bit of a pickle. Bloomberg now reports that the two video game giants are reckoning with the memory chip crisis in their own way, and neither sounds ideal. The publication, citing anonymous sources familiar with the matter, claims that Sony is considering delaying its next PlayStation console to 2028 or even 2029. Meanwhile, Nintendo is considering a price bump for its new Switch 2 console sometime this year, up from its current $450 price. The arrival of the PS6 may be delayed thanks to AI production, but that might not be a bad thing Nintendo aims to offset skyrocketing memory prices through "mass production of Nintendo Switch 2" Industry analysts are "extremely concerned about" console prices, wouldn't be shocked if the Nintendo Switch 2 costs more in 2026 Should the PS6 actually wait until 2029 to release, it would make the PS5 generation's 9-year run the longest gap between consoles in PlayStation history. Either way, it would at least stretch on long enough to rival the Xbox 360 and PS3, which had their lifespans elongated by a global recession. Although it's worth keeping in mind that a separate leak also suggested the PS6 could come out by 2028 and outperform the PS5 Pro. A Switch 2 price hike wouldn't be too ideal for Nintendo, either, after the company kick-started a wave of online complaints aimed at the console and Mario Kart World's price last year. Maybe the handheld console's historic momentum can keep it afloat despite potentially getting more expensive, though.
