Nintendo plans an "ongoing release" schedule for movies going forward. Nintendo enjoyed enormous success with 2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie, so it was no surprise to learn that Nintendo quickly got to work on a sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, with a live-action Zelda movie also in the works. Now, Nintendo has teased even more Nintendo movies may be on the way, while the company has also outlined its general philosophy for movies going forward. As part of Nintendo's latest earnings briefing, the company said it was working to build a "framework for a consistent release cadence" for films based on its properties. This includes The Super Mario Galaxy Movie in 2026, the live-action Zelda movie in 2027, and more films to come after. "We are continuing to prepare for the ongoing release of movies in the future," Nintendo said. None were named outright, but it was previously suggested that a standalone Donkey Kong movie could be in the works. Nintendo has a deep roster of popular characters and franchises, but only time will tell which will get adapted into film properties. It also remains to be seen if Nintendo will pursue TV shows based on its franchises. Nintendo was reported to have been in discussions with Netflix for a Zelda TV series at one point. This project never materialized, but the Zelda movie from Sony Pictures is reportedly due to begin filming in New Zealand this week, if it hasn't begun already. As announced previously, Bo Bragason is playing Zelda, with Benjamin Evan Ainsworth cast as Link. As for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, it's been reported that the first trailer will be attached to Wicked: For Good, which hits theaters later this month. Regarding Nintendo's philosophy for movie-making, the company said it doesn't simply license its properties to film studios. Instead, Nintendo is involved in the financing and "deeply involved" in production. Shigeru Miyamoto, for example, produced The Super Mario Bros. Movie and will be a producer on The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and the Zelda movie. The Super Mario Bros. Movie made a gargantuan $1.36 billon at the global box office, ranking as the No. 2 highest-grossing movie of 2023, only behind Barbie ($1.44 billion). The Super Mario Bros. Movie ranks as the No. 18 highest-grossing movie in history. "It was enjoyed by a vast audience, including those who had experienced Mario games, those less familiar with gaming, and people of all ages, from children to seniors," Nintendo said. "What has pleased us most about this film, even more than the measurable results, are the warm comments we received from so many people." Nintendo's gaming business is booming at the moment, thanks in part to the recent launch of the Switch 2. It's sold more than 10 million units thus far, becoming Nintendo's fastest-selling platform ever. Nintendo is enthusiastic about its sales potential this holiday, recently boosting the console's sales projections from 15 million to 19 million for the fiscal year that ends in March 2026.
