Almost a decade after it first came out, Nier: Automata crossed the milestone of selling ten million copies. To celebrate, Square Enix teased that the series will continue, but fans are slightly apprehensive about what might be coming to put it mildly.
On the back of the RPG joining the eight-figure-club this year, Square Enix put out a video looking back at Nier: Automata's success. It's essentially a montage of the myriad celebrations, collabs, ports and tie-ins that have occurred since we first met 2B, but then, right at the end, there's a glimmer of hope.
"Nier: Automata to be continued…" says the end of the celebration. Could this mean a new game? A sequel to Automata, or another installment in the Nier series? Or perhaps a return of Drakengard, the original property from which Nier is a spin-off? Fans are convinced it'll be none of the above.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3's reveal might be imminent as the RPG's director promises more news "than ever before"
"Then turns out to be just more merch on the store," says the top comment on a Reddit thread on the announcement. "It's not Nier to be continued, it's Automata. It's probably some merch or some bullshit," another adds.
There's form here, since the video in question demonstrates all the ways Nier: Automata's been franchised. While the tenth anniversary of the game itself is next year, and the series turns 16 this year, thus providing strong occasions for something more substantial, players are in the mode of believing it when they see it.
On the other hand, modern ports would be welcome. "Watch it be a console port of Nier: Reincarnation," says one commenter. "(Not against that mind you.)" The series celebrates its birthday in April, watch this space for anything exciting.
"I'm just such a warped person": Nier creator Yoko Taro says he's "insufferable at work" and feels jealous of devs with "a place to belong"
