"I absolutely love where this is going."
Marcus Lehto, who co-created the Halo universe and designed Master Chief himself, has weighed in on the recently announced Halo 1 remake. In short, he's loving what he's seeing.
For Lehto, he said the game is "gorgeous" and "feels genuine" to the original, which was released back in 2001 for the Xbox.

"My honest impression of seeing the new Halo Campaign Evolved is this: I absolutely love where this is going. The game looks and feels genuine. It's gorgeous in a way I wish we could have built it originally back in 2001. It warms my heart to see Halo CE like this," Lehto said.
This sentiment does not ring true for everyone, though, as another original Halo designer, Jaime Griesemer, blasted some of the changes. People have always had mixed feelings about Halo, and that continues to be true.
The Halo 1 remake, which is called Halo: Campaign Evolved, launches in 2026 for Xbox Series X|S and PC, as well as PlayStation 5. The franchise is synonymous with Xbox and has been exclusive on console to Xbox for 20+ years, but that changes in 2026 as part of the franchise's 25th anniversary. It may not be the last Halo game on PS5, either, as Halo Studios has said "Halo is on PlayStation" going forward.
Halo: Campaign Evolved features "reborn" visuals, new prequel missions, more guns, and the ability to sprint. Griesemer, for his part, said some of the Warthog changes are not to his liking. There is no head-to-head multiplayer support, but campaign co-op will be available. Check out the video above to get a closer look at the remake compared against the original.
Pricing for Halo: Campaign Evolved has not been announced, but it has been confirmed that the game will launch at the same time on all platforms, as opposed to coming to Xbox and PC before PS5. That's the case for Forza Horizon 6 in 2026, with PS5 players having to wait to play it.
In addition to Halo: Campaign Evolved, Microsoft is rumored to be working on a new live-service Halo game. Microsoft made no mention of this during the event where Halo: Campaign Evolved was announced, but confirmed previously that it had multiple new Halo games in the works. Halo: Campaign Evolved and future Halo titles will be developed using Unreal Engine 5.
As for Lehto, after he left Microsoft, he started a new company, V1 Interactive, and released the game Disintegration. The game failed to find an audience and V1 shut down. He later joined EA to work on what would become Battlefield 6, but he left the company in February 2024 and recently spoke out after he and some of his colleagues were left out of the Battlefield 6 credits.
