One critic wrote that the film features "no real horror and no real awareness that it should." The reviews rolling out for Five Nights at Freddy's 2 are brutal, featuring F grades and one critic saying that "there's simply nothing of value here." The sequel premieres in theaters today, December 5, and stars Josh Hutcherson, Piper Rubio, Matthew Lillard, Elizabeth Lail, Mckenna Grace, and Megan Fox. The scary-bad review scores aren't new for the Five Nights at Freddy's film franchise, which is based on the popular video game series. For instance, the first movie sports a 33 metascore, barely above Five Nights at Freddy's 2. That didn't stop the original film from earning roughly $291 million in 2023, per BoxOfficeMojo. Plus, in comparison, the user score was a 7.7, showcasing a wide split between critics and general audiences. That will be something to keep an eye on for Five Nights at Freddy's 2. One person who does think Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is freaking scary is Lillard. The actor even wondered if the film might get an R rating, but the sequel is PG-13. Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is directed by Emma Tammi, who helmed the first film, too. Series creator Scott Cawthorn penned the script. Below are some snippets from reviews for Five Nights at Freddy's 2: "Five Nights at Freddy's 2 not only has a more involved story, but also features more engaged filmmaking throughout, with more camera setups and visual brio. It also resembles an honest-to-goodness video game adaptation, since its melodramatic lore and formulaic, yet detailed, plot evoke video game mechanics, especially the protagonists' well-foregrounded use of analog technology like PC maps and passwords, walkie-talkies, and headphones." -- Simon Abrams [Full review] "There's simply nothing of value here, not even the thrill of an adrenaline rush from a cheap jump scare. Any attempts at shock are hollow and laughable. The viewer is likely to leave the theater feeling similar to how Josh Hutcherson appears in this film, understandably checked out, vacant, and simply worn down." -- Cody Dericks [Full review] "It's an incoherent mess, something that, back in the day, would be straight to DVD. Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 has an after-school special vibe with no real horror and no real awareness that it should. “What kind of kid would want to come here?” asks Mike. Indeed." -- Mark Kennedy [Full review] "It is a bare minimum branding experiment, a dumb thing designed to be recognized with the hope that enjoyment will simply follow." -- Jacob Oller [Full review] Latest in Five Nights at Freddy's 2 Five Nights At Freddy's 2 Is So Scary, Matthew Lillard Thought It Would Get An R We Ate The Popeyes Five Nights At Freddy's 2 Deluxe Box Five Nights At Freddy's 2 Adds Megan Fox And More To The Cast
