A paid expansion for F1 25 is coming next year instead of a brand-new game. EA Sports has announced that its F1 racing series is undergoing a "strategic reset" and will skip a new release in 2026 before returning in 2027 for a "new and more expansive F1 experience." In lieu of a brand-new release for F1 in 2026, EA Sports and developer Codemasters are releasing a paid expansion for F1 25 that includes new cars, teams, drivers, and more. The decision to forgo a brand-new release in 2026 is part of a "strategic reset" for EA's F1 franchise, the company said. For the new game coming in 2027, EA said its aim is to release a product that "looks, feels, and plays differently, delivering more gameplay choices." Codemasters boss Lee Mather said the studio is "fully committed" to the F1 series, and this announcement is part of a "multi-year plan" to grow the series going forward. It's still early days, but EA and Codemasters said the 2027 F1 game will feature all eleven F1 teams and a "refreshed experience..." EA acquired Codemasters for $1.2 billion, following a $994 million bid from Take-Two. EA also owns and runs the Need for Speed series, the most recent being 2022's Need for Speed Unbound. One of the core Need for Speed developers, Criterion, is now part of Battlefield Studios. In other news, EA is in the process of being acquired by an investor consortium led by Saudi Arabia for $55 billion in the largest leveraged buyout in history.
