"I haven't sat down to play the games. And I won't."
Fallout actor Walton Goggins, who plays The Ghoul, has said he's never played the Fallout games and does not intend to.
"I haven't sat down to play the games. And I won't. I won't. I won't play the games. I'm not interested," Goggins told PC Gamer ahead of the Fallout Season 2 premiere on December 17.
The actor said he's taking this approach to help his performance as The Ghoul. Playing the games could make him see his character in a different light, and he wants to avoid that.
"All of a sudden, I'm looking at this world from a very different perspective, and as something on a screen in which I am an avatar in. I don't believe that I'm an avatar. I believe The Ghoul exists in the world. I believe that Cooper Howard exists in the world," he said of the TV show.
Goggins added: "The best way that I can serve this world and serve the fans of this game, I think, is to go to work every single day and believe the circumstances that I'm presented with."
Aaron Moten, who plays Maximus, said he also has not played the Fallout games and he "can't play them now" while he works on the TV show. Not until he's done with the show would he consider jumping into the games.
"I feel like I get this really uniquely particular opportunity to be within the world of the game, like the Disney World version of it, where it's life-like and built out in front of me. But I'm still gonna wait. I'm gonna wait till I'm done," he said.
Ella Purnell, who plays Lucy, said she played Fallout 4 as part of her preparation for Fallout Season 1. Purnell called it "a really fun and exciting experience" to play the game. Playing Fallout 4 did not necessarily inform her performance, though, since Lucy is not in the games.
For Season 2, Purnell said she avoided playing Fallout: New Vegas, which Season 2 is loosely based on, but plans to play that game after Season 2 comes out. "And then I don't know what I'll do for Season 3," she said. "Maybe I'll play them all and become like a really addicted gamer. Who knows?"
For what it's worth, Prime Video has not officially announced Fallout Season 3.
As for the game series, Fallout 76 just got a new Burning Springs update, which added Walton Goggins' character from the TV show, The Ghoul, and a new region of the map to explore. Looking further out, Bethesda is making Fallout 5, but it's still early days.
