Berserk fans can add another steelbook cover to their anime collection on October 28. Berserk: The Golden Age Arc - Memorial Edition Steelbook (Blu-ray) $75 | Releases October 28 Decades after the original manga series first premiered, Berserk is still regarded as the gold standard of dark fantasy. Since then, the manga has been adapted into multiple anime series--and while none have encapsulated the entire tale, each one offers a unique take on Berserk's first main story arc. One of the better versions is Berserk: The Golden Age, which began as a film trilogy in 2012 that was later adapted into a 13-episode OVA, and is returning soon with the new Berserk: The Golden Age Arc - Memorial Edition Steelbook Blu-ray. This new two-disc set compiles the entire 13-episode series in an all-new steelbook case. It'll be available for $75 starting October 28, and preorders are available exclusively at Crunchyroll's online store. Berserk: The Golden Age - Memorial Edition first released as a standard Blu-ray set, but this new upcoming version features an exclusive Steelbook case. It also comes a postcard-sized art card featuring Guts and the Band of the Hawk during the Battle of Doldrey. Special features haven't been listed for this release, but it will likely feature the same bonus materials as previous Berserk: the Golden Age Blu-ray edition, which offered only textless opening and closing credits sequences. Berserk: The Golden Age is the second Berserk anime adaptation since the 1997 anime series, which also covers the Golden Age storyline from the manga. The trilogy offers a more faithful take on the source material, and it was later remastered and re-edited into a 13-episode anime series, which is what you'll find on the Memorial Edition Blu-ray. While the storyline is more accurate to the events of the manga, fans and critics were mixed on its visual style, which blends traditional 2D and 3D CG animation. Nevertheless, the film trilogy and OVA versions were both well-received overall, and this new Blu-ray should serve as an excellent way to experience one of the best story arcs in the genre. If you don't feel like waiting for this new Steelbook edition, you can grab the standard Blu-ray version of Berserk: The Golden Age - Memorial Edition for just $42.14 at Amazon. It includes all the same on-disc content as the Steelbook edition, just in less flashy packaging. The other Berserk anime adaptations are also available on Blu-ray. This includes the 2016 sequel series that picks up after Berserk: The Golden Age. While it isn't as well-regarded due to its stiff CG animation, it's nevertheless a solid way to experience the next part of the storyline for those who prefer watching anime over reading the manga. You can grab it via the Berserk (2016): The Complete Series Blu-ray set, which is on sale for $41 at Amazon (was $70). For an alternate take on the events of The Golden Age arc, there's also the cult-classic Berserk 1997 anime series, which is available in a Blu-ray box set for $36 (was $60) at Amazon. While it differs in key ways from the manga, it still perfectly matches the grim fantasy tone, and its hand-drawn animation remains stellar nearly three decades later. While these various anime series are all solid entry points into the dark fantasy world, nothing beats reading the original landmark manga series created by the late Kentaro Miura. The deluxe editions printed by Dark Horse reprint the story on premium paper in an oversized format that allows you to soak up every elegant illustration. Each edition also has a leatherette hardcover with an embossed branding symbol on it, red foiling, and a ribbon bookmark. The majority of these collected editions are also on sale for up to 40% off, so if you're looking to stock up on Berserk manga, now is a good time to grab a few.
