Whatever you think about the other characters in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, it's hard not to love Esquie. Modelled in the image of a stuffed toy, he’s the epitome of a gentle giant until, well, he's not. The voice actor behind the character would love to reprise the role, but he’s doubtful about the prospect.
In an interview from Fall Damage looking at various lines from across his career, Maxence Cazorla, who provided Esquie's voice and did motion capture for Verso and Gustave, gushed about the beloved behemoth. "Yes. Yes, I would love to play Esquie again," he gushes enthusiastically.
"But if I don't play Esquie again," he continues. "I feel like the story is kind of complete. All the arcs, I'm OK if that's it. There is a final dot to their story, a period." While being cautious of spoilers, Clair Obscur's narrative is rather complete. All of the endings have closures in a way that doesn’t necessitate a sequel.
"'Here is existential pain, live with it'": Expedition 33 actor Ben Starr says the JRPG's powerful story "represents so much of the reason why I continue to play games"
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 performance actor says Charlie Cox is "generous" to credit him for Game Awards nomination, explains "bringing Gustave to life was a team effort"
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's Verso actor prefers Maelle's ending to his own "because I really like my acting in it" – "choose the Maelle ending and you'll see why I won this award"
Of course, the possibility is always there, and the huge success of Expedition 33 makes a follow-up an easy call if Sandfall Entertainment wishes to go down that route. But there’s no immediate need because the story finishes on a strong note.
Cazorla goes on to talk about how much working on the project meant to him. "I gave two years of my life to Expedition 33, with the motion capture and Esquie and the behind-the-scenes," he recalls. "This game has changed my life, and if they ever want to work with me again on a future project, I'd love to."
He ends with a reminder that, "You never know what comes next." I wouldn't complain if Sandfall decided to give us more Esquie somehow, and I know I'm not alone, but we’ll see what happens.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 beats Elden Ring for most Game of the Year wins from awards shows, media outlets, and more, and it's not done yet
