Fan reception to Assassin's Creed Shadows and Assassin's Creed Mirage's new DLC releases has been polar opposite, with Mirage's free expansion getting overwhelming praise. Seemingly out of nowhere, the now two-year-old Assassin's Creed Mirage was given a brand new story expansion last week courtesy of the free Valley of Memory DLC, which added a whole host of quality-of-life changes to the game, as well as a new region and storyline. Meanwhile, the latest entry, Assassin's Creed Shadows, this week added a free update which features a new quest allowing Naoe and Yasuke to learn some of each other's skills, and more notably, a crossover with the anime series Attack on Titan of all things… However, the fanbase is somewhat divided on the quality of each game's expansions. Content creator Synth Potato posted about the DLC on Twitter saying, "AC Mirage's DLC having actual cutscenes is impressing me." They add, "It def speaks to how far Assassin's Creed storytelling has fallen that I am shocked the acting here was directed with INTENT." Assassin's Creed Shadows Claws of Awaji DLC launches to 'Mostly Negative' rating on Steam, with players citing bugs, "forgettable" story, and "tons of crashes" The new Assassin's Creed Mirage DLC is a blunt reminder that maybe we've outgrown the series' old-school formula once and for all Claws of Awaji is an ambitious expansion that hides a little too much of its shine behind Assassin's Creed Shadows' familiarity They soon follow this up with another post, saying: "It is far superior to Claws of Awaji of AC Shadows which was paid, So much care was put here into making this an emotional journey for Basim." Meanwhile, Twitter user TheHiddenOneAC shares a write-up about the new Attack on Titan crossover, saying, "That was a complete waste of time", adding that: "Almost 90% of the entire collab quest is just very generic climbing and swinging with really poorly put together routes." They also express disappointment that you don't even get to fight a Titan, saying, "You literally fight the fucking Gods in AC Origins, you fight mythical beasts in Odyssey, you fight dragons and deities in Valhalla. They didn't even bother to do this for the titan." Echoing Synth Potato's thoughts, TheHiddenOneAC adds, "The cutscenes are atrocious. I knew there'd be no mocap, but I forgot how bad the cutscenes were, especially after coming off VoM." Meanwhile, Ac_landmarks says: "We can't have inconsistencies like this anymore. Having Valley of Memory last week, a game with superb Mocap & storytelling compared to this abomination out in AC Shadows is SO INCONSISTENT!" Plus, TheHiddenOneAC isn't happy with your reward for beating the quest: "The moment you finish, a fucking pop-up shows up telling you to go to the store and buy the outfit instead with REAL MONEY." Another player succinctly sums the experience up: "It was so bad." "The Assassin's Creed franchise exceeded our expectations": Assassin's Creed Shadows is "overperforming" according to Ubisoft, set to "reach a broader audience" soon thanks to its new Nintendo Switch 2 port.
