Arc Raiders is a hit, but the extraction shooter's pitch didn't impress one of the Embark devs' kids years ago: "Sci-fi game? Very original"

Your criticism can't hurt Arc Raiders' art director Robert Sammelin, as his child has already been his biggest critic. In a new series called The Evolution of Arc Raiders, Sammelin describes how his own spawn was less than enthusiastic about Embark Studios' idea for a third-person extraction shooter. Gaming is full of third-person shooters, and it can be difficult to create your own niche in the genre, especially when it comes to the setting. In particular, third-person shooter x sci-fi is a well-trodden path, with behemoths like Halo, Mass Effect, and even the fairly recent Starfield. Tired of making "many, many Battlefield titles," former DICE devs started innovating with upcoming extraction shooter Arc Raiders and help from the past: PS2 classic Shadow of the Colossus The 5th most-wishlisted game on Steam, ex-Battlefield devs' extraction shooter Arc Raiders, was delayed 3 years because they realized it sucked: "This game is not fun" Arc Raiders gives Escape from Tarkov a run for its money, and the secret is making the shooter feel like an RPG that you can "almost play as a single-player game" Embark wasn't the only one to realise the overlapping venn diagram between this genre and setting, as Sammelin's kid delivered the artist a burn that he has thankfully now recovered from. "Even my kid, who was 12 at the time," Sammelin says. "[They] just had this sentiment going, 'Oh. New studio? Sci-fi game? Very original.'" Turns out that you can still serve a hit in an oversaturated market. Arc Raiders update nerfs a gun "capable of outgunning full squads" and may answer a fan who asked Embark to let them show off 600+ rubber ducks: "Your Raider Den has been ducked out."
