It appears that Nintendo fans were eager to upgrade to new hardware. The Switch 2 is already the fastest-selling Nintendo hardware to date, and data coming directly from the company indicates that most Switch 2 owners also owned a Switch 1. In Nintendo's latest earnings briefing, the company revealed that 84% of Switch 2 owners were Switch 1 players who made the jump to the new hardware. The figure is based on Nintendo's data as of September 30. "This high percentage shows that many consumers who enjoyed Nintendo Switch are smoothly transitioning to Nintendo Switch 2, allowing us to maintain our relationships with them across platform generations," read Nintendo's report. If you're interested in more detailed breakdowns, Nintendo also included a fun bar graph in the report, showing the proportions of Switch 1 owners who transitioned to Switch 2 by the time they received the older console. While Nintendo didn't include any exact percentage numbers in the year-to-year breakdown, the company said that there is "no concentration in any specific period" and that Switch 1 purchasers have been "uniformly migrating to Nintendo Switch 2. Even so, it's evident that those who recently got a Switch 1 aren't as eager to upgrade compared to early Switch 1 adopters. The earnings report included numerous insights into Nintendo's strategy going forward--the company is unsurprisingly shifting its "primary development focus" to Nintendo Switch 2, and it plans to maintain a steady pace of movie releases based on the company's properties. Still, Nintendo has some notable Switch 1 titles coming up, including Rhythm Heaven Groove and Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. It certainly helps those transitioning between hardware that almost all Switch 1 games are playable on Switch 2, with Nintendo acknowledging in its report that given the "widespread adoption of Nintendo Switch software, [the company is] seeing that many of these titles are also being played on the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware." According to Nintendo, the company has sold over 10 million Switch 2 units as of the end of September. Meanwhile, sales for the Switch 1 are creeping closer to those of the Nintendo DS, the latter of which is the company's best-selling hardware ever--at least, for now.
