2016's Tales of Berseria is getting remastered, leaving some JRPG fans puzzled as to why a mere 9-year-old game is getting this treatment before some much older entries

Yet another Tales JRPG is getting the remaster treatment, but this one's a bit more puzzling than the others. Bandai Namco has announced that Tales of Berseria, which came out just nine years ago in 2016, is getting a remaster for PS5, Xbox Series X, PC, and Switch. That's right, Switch. Not Switch 2. Of course, in the days of Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered and The Last of Us Part 1, reworks of games that aren't even a decade old aren't anything terribly new. That said, compounding the confusion in this case is the fact that there are many, much older games in the Tales series than Berseria. That said, Tales series producer Yusuke Tomizawa recently admitted that remastering old games can be tricky because tracking down the source code isn't always straightforward. Still, this doesn't even really make sense within the context of publisher Bandai Namco's "Tales Remaster Project," which is designed to bring more older Tales games to modern platforms. Berseria is already playable on PS5 and PC via their respective storefronts, and although Xbox and Switch are nice additions, ironically the remaster isn't compatible with the Switch 2 due to "problems with game progression," according to Nintendo's website. That seemingly leaves Xbox as the only new platform being supported. Like Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, JRPG veteran says Tales of remasters are tricky because "we have to start by finding out where the source code is" which is "a bit embarrassing" Square Enix reveals another classic JRPG getting a remake: Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined announced, coming February 2026 to consoles and PC 20 years later, cult classic PS2 JRPG Tales of Rebirth is finally fully playable in English thanks to a fan translation that's been in the works for nearly 4 years "I feel like i just beat this game," said Zenimax Media QA manager Erik Mabry on Bluesky in response to the announcement. "For some consoles it makes sense but you can literally play this on the PS5 and PC as well," said another Bluesky user. "So, like, Destiny and Eternity just don't exist anymore, huh?" said good ol' Uncle Silver on Bluesky. "Well at least now we are absolutely sure Namco will do everything BUT remaster/remake/port Abyss like fans want," said MightyK. "Phantasia, Destiny 1 and 2, Eternia, Rebirth, Legendia, Abyss, Innocence, Hearts, Xilllia 2, and Zestiria all found dead in a ditch," reads another despondent response. This response needs a visual, so I'll just embed the post: Xillia 2 fans be like— @hsojlightfoot.bsky.social (@hsojlightfoot.bsky.social.bsky.social) 2025-11-20T00:53:11.311Z Xillia 2 fans be like You get the idea. My initial response was more of an existential realization that Tales of Berseria came out in 2016 and not in, like, 2020-2022, and also that 2016 is almost 10 years ago now. Regardless, those are the facts, and Bandai says the remaster "levels up a memorable entry in the TALES series for current platforms, letting players experience an epic tale with new game play and quality-of-life features." It comes out February 27. These are the best JRPGs you can play today.
